Have you noticed we rarely talk about “the best people'' when it comes to attracting talent?
That's rarely who we actually want.
What we want are the right people.
The right person for your company might not have all the skills you need them to right away.
They might only have experience managing teams in a different kind of venue.
They might know how to make some basic cocktails but not how to make a good coffee.
They might not even be fluent in English
This is 100%, positively, no doubt about it, fine.
In hospitality, what you should be hiring for is attitude and personality, not skillset.
Why?
Simply put, you can teach skills. And as it’s pretty easy, when you know how. But attitudes are incredibly difficult to change.
And you can never teach personality.
What is the right attitude to hire for?
This is the fun part - YOU get to decide!
Do you want to lead a team of mavericks who love to innovate? Do you want a group of people who value dependability above all things? Do you enjoy working with nurturers who enjoy nothing more than helping those around them to grow?
Maybe you want all 3. You can have it.
It all starts with giving voice to your vision:
Start by asking these 3 questions-
What does good hospitality mean to you?
What do you want your business to feel like?
What kind of person do you like to work with?
You should end up with a list of characteristics that you truly value.
Hire with these characteristic in mind, and you will be well on your way to a venue filled with the Right People for you
